Allow the bead to cool until it loses its glow, then heat it high until it glows bright orange-white. Remove from flame and gently roll over a graphite or brass spatula. You will notice that the glass turns black. THIS IS GOOD! Now fill the bead with clear glass and the color will begin to change as the glass cools. You will get an even more interesting color after firing in a muffle furnace.

You’ll get the same result without the clear fill, but you’ll have to experiment with the hot flame temperature before cooling.

How to make the rainbow dots effect

Make a bead, place a dot with a stringer from raku, heat it and flatten it with a graphite or brass spatula. Let the bead cool slowly, then heat the point just a little again. As long as the edges of the dot are visible, continue to flatten it. This will give it rainbow shades. Apply a drop of clear glass over the dot and…tada…you have a rainbow Raku!
