What Is Tiffany Stained Glass?

The Tiffany technique builds a stained-glass picture from pieces of coloured glass wrapped in copper foil and joined with solder — lighter and more delicate than the old lead-came method.

It is named after Louis Comfort Tiffany, who popularised copper-foil work in the late 19th century for lamps, panels and suncatchers.

How it works

Each piece of coloured glass is cut to shape, its edges wrapped in adhesive copper foil, and then the foiled edges are soldered together with tin. The result is a strong, precise seam that can follow curves — perfect for detailed designs and small three-dimensional objects.

What you can make

  • Suncatchers that glow in a window;
  • small decorative figures;
  • panels and ornaments.
