Mindfulness through Craft - 4 Techniques with Glass - GlassBaker

Mindfulness is the practice of being consciously present in the moment. Working with glass naturally immerses you in this mode: attention is completely occupied by the process, the mind does not have time to wander. This post contains 4 techniques for working with glass and the mindfulness focus of each.

What is mindfulness in craft

Mindfulness is a branch of psychology (and an ancient practice of Buddhism) about returning attention to the moment here and now. Through craft this is achieved naturally: hands are busy, concentration is needed, there is no room for distractions. After 15-30 minutes of practice, the mind enters a state of flow (flow according to Csikszentmihalyi) — sustained attention without effort.

Lampwork – focus on flame

IN lampwork you work with glass in a gas burner flame at 1000°C. Pay full attention to the fire and glass — otherwise the bead will be deformed or you will get burned. These are the principles of mindfulness: continuous attention, present moment. 2 hours = deep practice.

Stained glass Tiffany – focus on cut

IN Tiffany stained glass you cut glass along a line with a glass cutter. Every cut requires precision and attention—tilt, pressure, speed. Mindfulness here is in the detail of the movement, in the awareness of each cut. At the same time, stress goes away because the space in the mind is occupied.

Fusing — focus on layering

Fusing — laying out a composition of colored glass in layers. You place each piece separately, thinking about the color next to the other, the composition as a whole. Mindfulness — in the aesthetic perception of color, shape, balance.

Mosaic — focus on placement

Mosaic — the most meditative technique. Each tessera (piece) is placed separately, in a separate place. 5-6 hours of rhythmic work. Focus completely on the current piece. This is close to sitting meditation, but in an active form.

How to develop mindfulness through activities

Go regularly — once every 2-4 weeks. Notice the moments when attention has gone and calmly return it to work. After the lesson, note your condition and compare it with what happened before. Gradually, the skill of concentration is transferred to everyday life.
